League cancellation costs GFA $2.2m

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is counting a $2.2 million loss following the decision to cancel the 2019/2020 season.

According to the GFA Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, the said amount would be lost through sponsorship of the FA Cup, television rights and other benefits the association receives from stakeholders.

The GFA took a firm decision to cancel the 2019/20 football season last Tuesday due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has disrupted the world's sporting calendar.

After a marathon meeting at its secretariat in Accra, the 12-member Executive Council considered all the available options if football were to resume.

“MTN made 1.1 million Ghana Cedis investment in the FA Cup so far: 800,000 cedis in cash and 300,000 cedis in products. StarTimes would have invested a little in excess of one million Ghana cedis of which they have paid some,” Asante stated during an interview on Accra-based Angel FM.

“The projections from NASCO for their products are estimated at $1.1million.

“The Football Association spent at least GH¢6,000 on every match day. This money went into paying referees, cameramen and Venue Media Officers,” he revealed.

The GFA will hold a congress on July 9, 2020, to deliberate on some pertinent issues, including when to resume football activities for next season.
