Kuffour’s appointment in limbo as Otumfuo renews Nti’s mandate

Former Bayern Munich defender Samuel Osei Kuffour’s quest to be named president of Asante Kotoko appears to have hit a snag.

The 2001 Uefa Champions League winner announced via a local television interview he had been handed the job by the owner and life patron of the club, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“Nana [the Asantehene] gave the job to me and said take it. You are not doing this for yourself but for this generation,” Kuffuor had told Metro TV.

His former club Bayern Munich had also gone as far as issuing a congratulatory statement on his ‘appointment’.

However, a latest statement on Kotoko’s official website indicate that Samuel Opoku Nti, the reported outgoing leader of the club, has been asked to continue his mandate, following a meeting with the Asantehene on Wednesday.

“Management has received the endorsement of the Asantehene, OtumfuoOsei Tutu II to continue working,” the communication read.

“The Opoku Nti-led management were at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday afternoon to meet the Owner and Life Patron of the club.

“The Great King, after the end of proceedings, directed the club managers to “open up on any challenge” they face while working.”

The latest development leaves Kuffour’s appointment in the balance.

According to Goal’s sources, the 39-year-old’s jumping of protocol in announcing his appointment ahead of official first words from the Asantehene has been seen as an act of utter disrespect to the king, and has thus, been responsible for the change of plans.

The former Roma man’s mandate was expected to have been officially announced last Friday.
