We don’t need cuban trainers — Tagoe

Former cruiserweight boxing champion, Napoleon Tagoe, has kicked against the over-reliance on Cuban coaches  for  nation team boxers without vetting them before their appointment.

He said the sport was more practical than theoretical and needed stakeholders and experienced administrators to test  boxing trainers before being handed the responsibility of coaching the national team.

Speaking to the Graphic Sports in an interview last Friday, the 46-year-old said he had the solution to the dwindling fortunes of the sport in the country and wanted a meeting with the Minister of Youth and Sports to discuss his plans for the sport.

According to him, he had the capacity to raise over 30,000 boxers in the country when given the opportunity and indicated that he could raise more than 2,000 boxers from the Odododiodoo constituency alone.

“I consider myself as the best trainer in the country and can also train a lot more coaches  who can  produce great boxers in the country”, he stressed.

Tagoe said with his knowledge in carpentry and welding he could easily  fabricate boxing rings, and other accoutrements needed for the sport and wanted to train boxers in every corner of Ghana but wanted to meet with the minister to discuss.

He said he could convert part of the Accra Sports Stadium into a gymnasium where boxers would train and when given the opportunity he could do that in two months.

The former champion noted that boxing had the potential of creating jobs and boosting tourism but conceded that government alone could not construct gymnasium across the country and  urged communities and the corporate world to join forces to help revive the sport.
