Bukom Banku, Powers in war of words

Ghana’s boxing sensation, Briamah Kamoko, aka “Bukom Banku”, took his recent war of words with his opponent Ayitey Powers to another level on Thursday by daring the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to hit him with a three-year ban if he was unable to live up to his prediction of a seventh round knockout of Powers in their April 18 bout in Accra.

Bukom Banku made the bold statement at the RLG-Hathiramani Hall of the Accra stadium during the launch of the much-anticipated cruiserweight fight dubbed “Judgement Night”.

Showman Kamoko arrived at the venue with a sizable entourage of fans and declared: “I dare the GBA to ban me for three years if I lose this bout to my opponent.”

Powers, on the other hand, said with the tough training he was undertaking, he would surely come out victorious on April 18.

“I know I will win the fight and that is why I challenged Banku for the bout,” he said.

Boxing connoisseurs expect Judgement Night to draw huge crowds to the Accra Stadium as a result of pre-fight war of words by both combatants and the general media hype the bout is enjoying. Ghana Boxing Authority President, Peter Zwennes, even made an audacious prediction that turnout on April 18 could surpass the attendance record of 130,000 spectators witnessed during the bout between David Kotei “Poison” and Danny “Little Red” Lopez on November 6, 1976.

“All projections and indications indicate that the fight would break the record set between D.K. Poison and Lopez at this same venue in 1976.”

“For the GBA, we are not thrilled by only the high attendance, but the opportunity to showcase Ghanaian boxing to the World,” Mr Zwennes said.

Fight promoter Alex Ntiamoah of Box Office Sports Promotions, described the bout as a dream come true for Ghanian boxing as it would showcase the fighters to the world.

The General Manager of MultiChoice Ghana, Cecil Sunkwa-Mills, gave a hint that the fight would be telecast live on SuperSport to over one million Ghanaian audience and 2.9 million fans across Africa.
