With barely a month to go for the parliamentary primaries of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the contest in the Cape Coast North Constituency has become intriguing among the five aspirants

The first deputy speaker of parliament, Mr Ebo Barton-Odro, who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Cape Coast North Constituency, has decided not to contest the seat for the second time thereby opening the floodgates for the five new aspirants to file to contest the primary in that constituency on November 7, 2015.

They are Messrs Justice Boison, Anthony Egyir Aikins, Charles Kojo Walker, Kobby Acheampong and Kakra Yalley.
Interestingly, a group calling itself “Patriotic citizens of Cape Coast North constituency” has emerged to raise red flags over the candidature of one of the five aspiring parliamentary candidates of the Cape Coast North Constituency, Mr Charles Kojo Walker, calling for his immediate disqualification.

It said should Mr Walker win the elections to represent the constituency in the legislature, his integrity would be in doubt following his involvement in an examination malpractice during his days as a student of the University of Ghana.

One-page petition

In a one-page petition copied to the Central Regional Chairman and the General Secretary of the NDC, a copy of which the Daily Graphic has, the group alleged that “Mr Charles Kojo Walker is the same Prince Charles Walker with ID number 10084797, who together with Kwadwo Tabiri Asenso Okyere, ID number 10082811, and three others were expelled from the university for examination malpractices which hit the university in the year 2004 and 2005”.

Citing a Daily Graphic publication on May 6, 2006, to buttress their allegations, the group further urged the leadership of the NDC to investigate the matter and the processes by which the aspiring Cape Coast North parliamentary candidate changed his name from Prince Charles Walker to Charles Kojo Walker.

Vetting committee

It accused Mr Aquinas Quansah, the Central Regional Minister, and Mr Allotey Jacobs, the regional chairman of the party, of aiding the clearance of Mr Charles Kojo Walker by the NDC vetting committee to contest the upcoming elections and called on the national leadership of the party to “investigate how Mr Walker was able to dribble his way through the vetting process in spite of the concerns we had raised”.

It expressed the hope that their concerns would be addressed in order to not jeopardise the chances of the NDC in the 2016 parliamentary elections in the Cape Coast North Constituency.
