Volta NDC supports Agavedzi tidal wave victims

The Volta Regional Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have visited the affected persons of a recent tidal wave that affected residents of Agavedzi, a community in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.

The team, led by the Volta Regional Chairman, Mr Henry Ametefe, visited the coastline to also inspect ongoing works on the sea defence wall project of Agavedzi aimed at preventing further destruction of properties.

The latest tidal wave incident washed away homes and destroyed properties along the beaches, rendering several people homeless.
Commenting on the matter during the visit, Mr Ametefe commiserated with the people of Agavedzi, noting that the situation had been a very difficult one because the entire community of over 70 households had been affected and not even a single household was left.

Slow pace of work

The regional chairman lamented the slow pace of work being done on the sea defence by the construction company and urged them to expedite the process.

He said, "Ghana does not need a cathedral, neither does she need a new chamber. What she urgently needs now is a sea defence project from Agavedzi to Aflao to protect citizens."

He called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to, as a matter of urgency, address the challenges affecting the communities along the coastlines.

He also called on the Ministry of Works and Housing to ensure that contractors who had abandoned the site at Agavedzi resumed work in order to complete the project to curb any further tidal wave attacks on the people.

Donations

Mr Ametefee, on behalf of the party, donated an undisclosed amount of money to women and children affected by the waves of the sea.

He pledged his full support to assist the community and to ensure they had good homes and a safe environment to live in.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Ketu South Municipality, Mr Elliot Edem Agbenorwu, also assisted the affected community by providing them with blankets, bowls, mattresses, mosquito nets and coils, food and clothing through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Government’s action

Mr Agbenorwu said the government would expedite action on the project to help the people of the area.

The Dufia of Agavedzi, Torgbui Sewor Aklika Futupkor IV, also commended past and present governments for helping solve the biggest challenge of the community.

He advised political parties to always be united and ensure the development of the country.

When the Daily Graphic visited the Agavedzi community, the sea had completely washed away homes along the coastline.

According to the residents, even though the community lay above the sea level, persistently the sea level rose and inundated most parts of the community, destroying houses and properties.

They, therefore, called on the government to quickly come to their aid.
