According to the MP, it should be the primary concern of all NDC supporters to back the President's effort to constitute an effective government.

Mr Iddrisu was reacting to acts of vandalism by persons believed to be NDC supporters who were incensed at the exclusion of his name from the latest batch of ministerial appointees announced onThursday.

The angry youth, who said they were members of the NDC Youth Network for Peace, tore down and burnt billboards that had pictures of the President and Mr Inusah Fuseini, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister designate for Lands and Natural Resources.

It was widely speculated that Mr Idrissu, the Caretaker Communications Minister, would be assigned the newly created Oil and Gas Ministry.

However, following the appointment of Armah Kofi Buah, after agitation by Western Region chiefs for an indigene to head the ministry, some of Mr Idrissu’s followers accused the President of bowing to pressure from the chiefs.

Speaking to Joy News on Thursday, however, Mr Iddrisu described the incident as regrettable and unfortunate, urging party faithful not to engage in conduct that would threaten the peace of the constituency.

He also called on the party faithful in the region to remain calm and respect the judgment and discretion of President Mahama as he compiled a formidable team to deliver the "Better Ghana" agenda.

He also expressed his readiness to collaborate with opinion leaders in the area to forestall the escalation of violence.

Meanwhile, calm has returned to Tamale after Thursday's chaos.
