Supreme Court interpretation of Article 97 liberates NPP MPs to now support Alan - Solomon Owusu

Solomon Owusu, a communications officer for Alan Kyerematen's Movement for Change says the Supreme Court's ruling that interpreted Article 97 and said a Member of Parliament's seat can only be declared vacant within a term of Parliament was a good news for the Alan campaign team.

According to him, a number of New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs were supporting Alan Kyerematen on the quiet and are scared to come out publicly.

But with this Supreme Court ruling, they can now come out with no fear that they may lose their seats on the grounds of crossing carpet. 

Solomon Owusu who was speaking on Wednesday to TV3 said before the ruling, many NPP MPs who favoured Kyerematen’s bid were hesitant to express support openly due to fears of losing their membership of the NPP, which could translate into they losing their seats.

“The decision of the Supreme Court is a victory for Alan Kyeremanten. We are so happy. If this decision had come earlier, we would have had many MPs openly supporting Mr. Alan without fear of losing their seats,” Solomon Owusu said

He said this new development now frees the said MPs from concerns about retribution, which may now lead to a visible shift in support toward Kyerematen. 

“I’ve been told that more than half of the MPs on the NPP side have been supporting Mr. Alan in silence,” he said.
