The Chairman and leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kofi Portuphy has accused the Akufo-Addo led government of engaging in lavish banquets at the expense of the country’s development.

According to him, Akufo-Addo and his appointees have reduced governance of the country to the making of "tea parties", and "unnecessary spending on neckties, suits and other materialistic things" to show off.

"Governance is not a tea party", he bemoaned, adding that “governance is not about lavish spending on unnecessary things”.

Mr Portuphy was addressing a press conference organised by the NDC at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday.

According to him, the Akufo-Addo led government had failed Ghanaians woefully, adding that they (NPP) deceived Ghanaians to vote them into power with many unrealistic promises.

He said since the NPP took over the realms of power, President Akufo-Addo has engaged in unnecessary travels which had not brought any good result to the country, but instead draining the limited resources in the national purse.

He said the Akufo-Addo led administration had equally failed to fight corruption, saying “there is moral and spiritual corruption in the country”.

Touching on rationale for the press conference, Mr Portuphy said, the purpose of it was to address issues along the lines of lawlessness, insecurity, and government-backed terrorism in the country.

In addition, he also spoke on issues bordering on the "composition of government, nepotism, lack of commitment to fight corruption, arrogance of power, lies, dishonesty, and unbridled partisanship that had engulfed the NPP government."

Mr Portuphy said the six months of the NPP government in power has seen the country witnessing unprecedented incidences of insecurity created by members of the NPP vigilante and militant groups.

Killings

“These criminal gangs have been allowed to wage a psychological war on the security apparatus by attacking and openly killing policemen in uniform”, he said.

According to him, "very credible intelligence information reaching us [NDC] indicates that the recent killings and attacks on security personnel were being orchestrated by elements within NPP."

He added “unable to fulfil the plethora of promises made to these criminal gangs, the government is sitting idly by and watching the criminals take the law into their own hands and do whatever they want to do to satisfy their whims and caprices”.

Corruption/ arrogance

Mr Portuphy further accused the government of Akufo-Addo of being arrogant with power, saying “arrogance, lies, and dishonesty, have become the visible trademarks of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government”.

“In only six months, the NPP appears to have been bitten deeply by the bug of arrogance”, he lamented.

He said the Akufo-Addo led government has failed to fight corruption, explaining that the failure of President Akufo-Addo to prosecute the boss of Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) Company Limited, Mr Alfred Obeng was a clear indication that his government has failed to fight corruption."
