Prez’s appointments are unfair - Kusaug students union

President John MahamaThe University of Education, Winneba branch of the National Union of Kusaug Students (NUKS), has expressed disillusionment and disappointment in the President’s appointment of his ministers and deputies, describing it as uneven and unfair.

It said the appointments made in the Upper East Region were sectionally biased and gender insensitive, pointing out that the most affected part was the Kusaug Traditional Area.

A statement issued by the union in Accra at the weekend expressed regret that after campaigning day and night to ensure the victory of all their parliamentary candidates and NDC as a whole, the people of Kusaug had been left out and not compensated accordingly.

The statement, signed by Messrs Osman Sulemana, president and Azongo John Ibrahim, public relations officer of the union, said in terms of national and party politics, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had been the anointed political party of the people of Kusaug and as a result of their loyalty and the ever increasing support for the NDC party, former President Rawlings and the late President Atta Mills  compensated them in appreciation of their support for the party.

It said even former President Kuffour, who had meagre support from Kusaug did not leave the people of Kusaug out of his government.

“In our analysis, it is only this current NDC government that has seen Kusaug to be less important to its administration. The union appreciates the fact that Mr Mahama Ayariga is part of the current government. This notwithstanding, Kusaug deserves more and better than that, taking into consideration the area’s contributions and support for the party,” the statement said.

It said an issue which was more devastating was the case of Mr Dominic Azumah Azimbe, a senior member of parliament who was appointed by the late President Mills in June, 2012, was not promoted or maintained.

This issue, the statement said, shocked every son and daughter of Kusaug.

According to the statement, the appointment so far made in the Upper East Region was not gender sensitive.

“We were anticipating that Hajia Ladi as the only  female MP from the region would have  been part of the government to encourage the numerous women in the Kusaug Traditional Area and the Upper East Region in general to actively take part in politics,” it added.

Noting that ministerial appointments were the prerogative of the President with outside forces having little influence, the statement appealed to the people of Kusaug to remain calm and not resort to open demonstration and destruction of party posters and property like others did to draw the attention of the President.

“The era of violence, destruction of party posters and property is gone but time will tell,” it concluded.
