Politicians urged to watch utterances

Politicians have been cautioned by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma North Constituency, Mr Justice Joe Appiah, to refrain from utterances that could cast doubts on the verdict of the Election 2012 Petition.

The MP, who said this in an interview in Accra last Friday, sent the same caution to the communication teams of the various political parties.

He entreated Ghanaians to give the Supreme Court Judges the peace of mind and freedom to go through the facts  in order to come out with a verdict that would be acceptable to all.

“Anything short of that could be a recipe for chaos which would undermine the peace and security of this nation,” he said.

Mr Appiah said there was no need to do or say anything that could “open the floodgates for irresponsible comments in the media.”

He said Ghana had come a long way and that everything should be done to sustain the peace the citizenry were enjoying.

The MP commended Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the 2012 Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for choosing the path of peace by going to court to seek justice in the interest of the nation.

“The histories of electoral violence in some African countries like Kenya and Ivory Coast are still too fresh to be forgotten and I plead that we all do what will engender peace for Ghana,” he said.

He appealed to all NPP supporters and Ghanaians in general to be patient while awaiting the final verdict of the election petition from the Supreme Court.

On Wednesday, July 17, the Supreme Court  fixed July 30, 2013 for both petitioners and respondents to file their written addresses and indicated that the court would sit the following day to give further directions.
