New voters register: Rev. Minister counsels moderation

The Director of Evangelism of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Rev. Emmanuel Antwi-Tumfuor, has said Ghanaians must promote constructive engagement in putting forward ideas on the best way to make the country’s voters register credible.

Members of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), he said, should create a favourable platform where the issue of “whether or not we need a new voters register or the existing one should be cleaned to ensure credible election next year could be dispassionately discussed”.

Interest groups

“As we approach the 2016 election, interests groups such as political parties, pressure groups, security services (eg. police and civil society) should promote healthy debate with regard to all issues of national concern, particularly those relating to elections,” he said in an interview with the Daily Graphic following a farewell service held in his honour as the outgoing Ablenkpe District Pastor of the EP Church.

Ghanaians, he said, should show maturity in all the processes leading to a successful December polls next year, adding that “the unity and stability of our country and growth of constitutional democracy should be the watchwords”.

Projects

Commenting on projects he had undertaken during his five-year stay at the church, he mentioned the establishment of the E.P. Church Academy in 2014, which has enrolment up to class 2, construction of an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) centre, a well-stocked library with 900 books for children and adults, a well-furnished office for the resident pastor, a borehole and a water tank and reinforcing the church wall and gate.

He asked students to make use of the library facility to improve on their reading skills, adding that they should not abuse the ICT facility by going to sites which would not help them.

“I appreciate Mrs Henrietta Sosu who was very instrumental in the donation of the books by the Ghana Library Authority,” the clergyman said.

Religious leaders

Rev. Antwi-Tumfuor urged religious leaders to propagate their messages without appearing to be insulting the religions of others.

“Let’s tolerate the views of those who do not share in our belief. The show of arrogance which some religious leaders display in their preaching, by attacking other religions, must be discouraged. Let us explore the unity in diversity and push Ghana’s development agenda forward,” he said.
