NCCE will continue to fulfil mandate — Director

Mrs Charlotte Osei, NCCE BossThe Northern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE),  Mr Razak Saani,  has said the NCCE will continue to fulfil its constitutional mandate for the benefit of residents in the region.

“We will not be distracted by negative criticisms against the institution,” he told participants attending the fifth in the series of the Project Citizen Programme in Tamale.

The programme is one of the flagship programmes of the NCCE where civic education clubs in schools are encouraged to conduct research into critical issues of national concern.

Six second cycle institutions participated in the programme. They are Tamale Senior High School (TAMASCO),  Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO), Northern School of Business (NOBISCO), Vitting Secondary/Technical, Tamale Islamic School and Tamale Girls Senior High School. It was sponsored by the European Union delegation in Ghana.

Mr Saani further observed that recent calls for the scraping of the NCCE were destructive rather than constructive since it did not promote the healthy development of the country.

According to the director, majority of Ghanaians, particularly those in the rural areas, were aware that the NCCE had over the years been instrumental in conflict management, peace promotion and social auditing where people were empowered to question duty-bearers about what was expected of them.

The NCCE Director in charge of the Project Citizen Programme, Madam Dora Hammond, noted that the programme was adopted by the NCCE to fill in the gaps caused by the absence of Civic Education as a subject in the country's schools curricula.

According to her, the programme equipped participants with presentation skills, team building spirit and the ability to research into national issues.

Madam Hammond equally noted that the programme built the confidence of the participants and helped broaden their knowledge on a wide range of issues.

"I must confess that the students are doing a very good job as some of their recommendations and solutions to the problems identified in their respective communities are very practical," she stated.
