Intensify road safety campaign - Kofi Apaloo

The leader of the Independent People’s Party (IPP), Mr Kofi Apaloo, has appealed to the National Road Safety Commission to intensify its road safety campaign to discourage the dangerous practice whereby motorcyclists jump traffic lights.

He explained that if persuasion failed, the law enforcement agencies such as the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Police could also assist to arrest people especially motorcyclists who jump traffic lights.

This is because their activities are causing a lot of accidents, sometimes resulting in the loss of precious lives.

He said the activities of the motorcyclists, if not checked, would increase lawlessness on the roads.

He expressed worry that pretty soon, other small vehicles such as the tricycles introduced recently into the country would join the motorcyclists in abusing traffic regulations

Preparations
Mr Apaloo made the observation when speaking to the Daily Graphic on wide range of issues, including the preparations of his party towards their national delegates conference in Kumasi before the close of this year.

Mr Apaloo also spoke against the practice which was common in the country; of families allowing children to sit or stand in front seats of cars without using child seats and accompanying seat belts.

He said the children often got injured - sometimes fatal - when the vehicle on which they were travelling applied its breaks, making the children’s foreheads hit the dashboard.

Future leaders
He said the practice should be checked by the police since it was against the law to allow children below five years of age to sit in the front seats of vehicles.

Mr Apaloo said the country could not afford to lose its human resources since their contribution in future to the national development could not be underestimated.

He called on the National Road Safety Commission to intensify its road safety activities to include motorcyclists and other road users who of late were playing an important role in the transportation system of the country.
