I consider it a failure for not uniting Nkrumaist front — Dr Mahama

A former flag bearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr Edward Nasigri Mahama, has said he considers it a failure for not uniting all the Nkrumaist front to win presidential elections.

Dr Mahama has, therefore, welcomed the efforts and progress made so far by the PNC and the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in their unity talks aimed at merging the two Nkrumaist parties into a formidable front for the 2016 election.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Accra, just after receiving a PNC delegation, Dr Mahama said the unity talks were in the right direction since Ghana was in dire need of a third force.

He said the third force party could help provide an alternative governance to the misrule by the two main political parties - the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Management

He said the management of the economy by the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party would not take the country anywhere.

Dr Mahama said both political parties could not solve the basic problems confronting the country such as adequate electricity and water supply for both industrial and domestic use.

He,therefore, said the Nkrumaist unity was a must and every effort ought to be marshalled to make the unity of splinter Nkrumaist parties possible.

He likened the governance of the country to the traditional cooking pot which stood on three legs or on a tripod.

He said the governance of the country also required a third force like a traditional cooking pot so that the third force could come in if the two main political parties continued to fail Ghanaians.

Political parties

Dr Mahama said the country could not depend on the policies imposed on it by the two main political parties, saying “it is the third force that is the answer to the socio-economic problems confronting the nation.”

He said, for example, that the energy crisis could be solved completely by the introduction of energy mix for the country which would include solar, hydro, nuclear , wind power and fossil energy.

He, however, observed that the two main political parties had continued to rely on hydro power alone, which had precipitated the energy crisis in the country beyond control.

He said the PNC had the policies and ideas to implement an energy mix programme to solve the shortfall in the energy supply.

Dr Mahama explained that there could be an improvement in the electricity and water supply since the availability of power could enable water treatment plants to work at full capacity to supply adequate water.
