Ghanaians urged to demand accountability

The Bishop of the Kumasi Diocese of the Methodist Church has said the time has come for Ghanaians to demand accountability from their leaders and stop voting on tribal lines.

That, he said, would bring some sanity into the political system as opposed to the current system where some politicians  deceived the electorate.

Rt Rev. Prof. Osei Safo Kantanka said this at a leadership lecture organised by the Global Leadership Network (GLN), a local non governmental organisation in Kumasi.

He noted that the problems facing the country could be attributed to leadership failure, which runs through every level of society.

These failures, he said, had manifested through poverty, hunger, unemployment, deprivation and high level of graduate unemployment and indiscipline.

Rev. Prof. Safo Kantanka observed that because tribalism had entered the nation’s body politic, political leaders seemed to have taken Ghanaians for granted and would prefer satisfying the needs of their cronies to being concerned about the welfare of Ghanaians.

The President of the GLN, Mark Kakraba-Ampeh, said the network intended to train new transformational and reformative leaders through symposia, leadership seminars in schools, work places and at the community levels.

He said the objective of setting up the network was to grow and support responsible leaders and to demand accountability from them.

The chairman of the occasion, Oheneba Adusei Poku, the Akyempimhene, noted that leadership entailed a lot and “goes beyond just the mere touting of the titles.”

He also bemoaned the current crop of leaders in the country and stressed on the need for leaders with the ability to lead the country to the promised land.

He commended the executive members of the network for coming up with such an organisation with the aim of grooming leaders worthy of their titles, who would change the fortunes of the country through exemplary leadership.
