PWDs urged to support gov’t for more funding

The fifth batch of the People with Disability (PWDS) in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region received start-up items of their choice from the disability fund of the assembly at Odumase-Krobo last Friday.

Twenty-four beneficiaries for the fifth batch received container shops, sewing machines, bags of charcoal, iron sheets, fufu pounding machines, ice chests, bags of cassava dough and maize, industrial sewing machines, cement blocks, wood, water tanks and pure water-producing equipment, among other items.

At a short presentation ceremony at the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly premises, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Simon Kweku Tetteh, praised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his initiative for the assemblies to purchase items of the choice of the PWDs instead of the cash which hitherto was given to them.

He said the new policy directive from the President pointed to the policy of Ghana beyond aid which was part of the government’s policies.

Job creation

The MCE said the president’s new initiative had created jobs not only for the PWDs but other relations of the PWDs and citizens who worked for them, and that had boosted the local economy, adding “this is why Ghanaians, especially the beneficiaries of the programme, must appreciate the President and his current government and ask for more of such interventions.”

“The government is putting food on your tables nowadays and most of you who used to beg for alms at Agormanya Market have stopped.

Most of your counterparts who had the items of their choice earlier have established themselves and are doing very well according to reports from the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development.

The President will like you, this batch, to do same so that you can lift your individual burdens from your relatives and families,’’ Mr Tetteh challenged them.

According to Mr Tetteh, once they identified and requested for the various items for their businesses, they should be committed to whatever they had decided to do to alleviate poverty.

Unpleasant rumours

The MCE said there were rumours that some of the PWDs who received start-up items earlier attempted selling them and warned that the law would not spare anyone found culpable.

The Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Mrs Jemima Apedo Kalli Krates, lauded most of the PWDs who received the items earlier for making effective use of what they requested for, and expressed the hope that the fifth batch would do same to enable them to work hard to earn decent living and make savings towards the future as most of them had families.

External monitoring

The Municipal Director for Social Welfare and Community Development, Mrs Naa Akuye Ofosu, said the idea of the President had actually engaged the PWDs economically and those who were very serious were benefiting from the new policy, adding that the government’s policy was yielding results.
