CPP must unite to capture power — Amoah

The newly inducted Chairman of the Council of Elders for the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr Felix Kwaku Amoah, has said the party’s abysmal performance in the 2012 general elections was a reflection of the division among the members and leaders within the party.

He has, therefore, challenged the leadership of the party, headed by its Chairperson, Ms Samia Yaaba Nkrumah, to go beyond every boundary to unite the party or else forget the 2016 elections.

Mr Amoah said this at the send-off ceremony for the past Chairman of the CPP Council of Elders, Mr Kwaku Amoah-Awuah, held at the party’s headquarters in Accra last Friday.

The ceremony was also used to induct Mr Amoah as the new chairman of the council.. The occasion brought together some regional and national executives of the party and the 2012 presidential candidate, Dr Michael Abu Sakara.

Party killing itself

According to Mr Amoah, over the past 22 years, the CPP had failed to make any meaningful impact in the country’s political dispensation because of the divisions and reluctance of members to work as a united team.

“I can tell you for a fact that the division within the party has also hit some of the council of elders. Is this what we intend to use to capture power in 2016?” he asked.

Mr Amoah said his leadership would not support council of elders who engaged in destructive politics that would tarnish the image of the party, adding: “I will make sure those individuals who allow any form of division in the party are dealt with.”

Mr Amoah observed that apart from dealing with the internal issues within the CPP, one effective way for the party to gear itself up for the upcoming 2016 elections was for the leadership of the party to ensure efficient organisation at the constituency level.

“Every political party that has ever won power did so because of the effectiveness of its members at the constituency level,” he said.

CPP’s convictions

In her welcome address, Ms Nkrumah called on the youth within the party to rise up and work efficiently to strengthen CPP’s foundation ahead of election 2016.

According to her, the CPP would make sure that issues that hindered the party’s chances of capturing power in 2012 did not creep in to affect the party in the 2016 general election.

Shifting her attention to the economy of Ghana, she said the CPP’s government would not bow down to any foreign directives or policies that would drag the citizens into bondage.

According to Ms Nkrumah, International Monetary Fund (IMF) policies have forced the government to implement harsh policies and programmes affecting the well-being of Ghanaians.

Outgoing Chairman’s remarks

Mr Amoah-Awuah commended the leadership of the party and members of the council of elders for their support and assistance during his tenure.

He gave the  assurance that although he was stepping down, he would continue to support the party for it to climb back to government.
