However it was projected on to an interactive “smartboard” used for teaching computing. The school received complaints from a number of pupils after the incident in April.

The teacher was immediately suspended while an investigation was carried out and he was sacked in August.

Lawrie accessed the website while teaching an S2 class.

He has since consented to his removal from the teaching register, which will bar him from working in classrooms for good.

He can only teach again if he applies to be reinstated to the register and is approved by a panel.  The case was set to be called before a General Teaching Council panel in Edinburgh this morning.

North Lanarkshire Council said they thoroughly investigated the incident over four months before terminating Lawrie’s contract.

Coatbridge High is a non-denominational co-educational school with a roll of well over 1000 pupils and despite Lawrie’s shock exit, several of them had previously praised him and scored him highly on website Rate My Teacher.

When the Record contacted Lawrie yesterday, he declined to comment.
