The new Wa-Han-Tumu 161kv transmission project.

Wa-Han-Tumu transmission line completed

Construction of the Wa-Han-Tumu 161kv transmission line project to enhance efficiency and stability in the supply of power to the northern sector of the country has been completed.

The 4,086,558.45 Euro project was funded by Societe Generale, with the Government of Ghana providing GH¢16,415,160.25. The project was executed by Eiffage Enernies T &D of France.

GRIDCo upgrade

The sub-station has been upgraded from the previous 34.5kv transmission network to the 161kv, thus closing the link between Wa-Tumu in the west and Navrongo and Bolgatanga in the east.

In addition, the previous capacity of the Sawla sub-station has also been upgraded and expanded with transformers increased from one to two to ensure efficiency in the generation of power transmission.

By this, the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has completed a loop of the power transmission in the northern sector from Techiman through Sawla, Wa, Tumu, Bolgatanga, Tamale and back to Techiman.

Power fluctuation

Briefing the press at the Wa project site last Saturday, Mr Albert Quainoo, Head of the Public Relations Department of GRIDCo, said the completion of the new transmission lines would halt the power fluctuations in the area.

"Other benefits of the network include an increase of transmissible power to the inter-connection among Ghana, Burkina Faso and Mali, as well as flexibility in maintenance and voltage control," he said.

The Project Co-ordinator, Mr Matthias Afari, said the completion of the "transmission loop in the northern sector would tremendously enhance electric power delivery, power system reliability and stability".
