Veep cuts sod for rehabilitation of Sunyani town roads

The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has cut the sod for the construction and rehabilitation of Sunyani town roads.

Last Thursday’s ceremony in Sunyani was attended by the chiefs and people of the Sunyani Traditional Council, and formed part of the Vice-President’s activities during his tour of the Bono Region.

The 29-kilometre project will be part of major road construction or rehabilitation works across the country being funded under the Sinohydro agreement between the government on one hand, and Sinohydro Corporation and the Chinese government on the other hand.

At least 26 communities under eight suburbs in the Sunyani Municipality are to benefit from the Sunyani inner city roads construction and rehabilitation.

Roads

The areas include Agyei Ano (Dr Berko area roads), Mayfair area roads, Baakonlaba area roads, New Town area roads, Estate inner link roads, Berlin Top area roads, Penkwase area roads and Sunyani inner link roads.

The Sunyani town road works are expected to improve road access and traffic flow in the city.

Road construction

At the ceremony, Dr Bawumia said the construction and rehabilitation of the Sunyani inner city roads were part of the government’s vision to improve and expand access to the country’s road network.

"As you are aware, President Akufo-Addo has declared 2020 as the year of roads. Though we have experienced some challenges due to COVID-19, our focus remains to deliver good quality roads to the good people of this country," the Vice-President said.

Sinohydro Agreement

Dr Bawumia took a swipe at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their supposed displeasure with the Sinohydro Agreement on infrastructure development in the country, but said it had been beneficial to Ghanaians.

"When we passed the Sinohydro agreement in Parliament, they even wrote to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to stop this agreement from taking place after they had said it was 419.

“Today, we are cutting the sod for the Sunyani inner city roads, and this is not the only project that we are dealing with under this agreement," he stated.

He said it was from the benefits of that agreement that the government was tackling the Accra inner city roads, the Kumasi inner city roads, Tamale Interchange project, PTC Interchange in Takoradi, Adentan-Dodowa dual carriage road, the Western and Cape Coast inner city roads, upgrading of feeder roads in the Western and Ashanti regions, Akim Oda-Ofoase-Ayirebi road, and the Hohoe-Jasikan-Dodo-Pepeso road.
