The minister observed that some of the NGOs were not using such funds judiciously and therefore called for the establishment of internal mechanisms to track its disbursement for the benefit of the people.

Mr Ackon was speaking in an interview on the sidelines at the 20th anniversary celebration of CARE Ghana, an international NGO, in Accra.

CARE Ghana

Established in 1994, CARE Ghana has made an impact in sectors such as health, agriculture, food security, governance and water and sanitation.

The organisation has been working in partnership with government, district assemblies and civil society organisations to reduce poverty and social injustices in deprived communities through the introduction of innovative programmes.

Their interventions have over the years helped to improve the livelihoods of the rural poor and the vulnerable.

The anniversary was used to highlight the achievement of the organisation and discuss the way forward.

Commendation

The minister commended CARE for its immense contribution to development of the country.

He noted that a well co-ordinated public-private partnership put society at the core of development.

Projects

The Country Director of CARE, Mr Elkanah Odembo, said despite the vast resources in the country, majority of Ghanaians were deprived and it was for this reason that his outfit continued to empower deprived and vulnerable women in rural communities to improve on their lot.

According to the director, the organisation had so far implemented water and sanitation projects in 56 districts across the 10 regions.

Management

The Chief of the Esikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, urged authorities entrusted with the nation’s resources to manage them well for the benefit of the people.

“We have allowed people to plunder our natural resources for too long,” he indicated.
