Upgrading works on the 10-km Hansua road and connecting links in the Techiman Municipality in the Brong-Ahafo Region is near completion.
The contractor, Messrs Kofi Job Company Limited, has so far completed drainage works, earthworks, and primer seal on the Hansua section of the road project.
The company was contracted by the Department of Urban Roads (DUR) to upgrade 12 roads in the municipality in order to improve on the road network in the growing urban area.
The upgrading works cover the Block Factory Road, Fante New Town Road, King Saud Road, Abuoso-Kumasi By-pass and Goshen Link.
The Minister of Road and Highways, Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani, who is on a three-day visit to the Brong Ahafo Region, visited the Hansua road project to inspect on-going works.
He expressed satisfaction with the work done so far and urged the contractor to effectively collaborate with engineers on the project to deliver a good road that would stand the test of time.
The project
The upgrading works on the Hansua road and connecting links is scheduled for completion in December, this year. The project was awarded in January 2012, and work started in June, the same year.
The project is being carried out at a cost of Gh¢13.7 million and is financed by the government.
About Techiman
Techiman, in the Brong Ahafo Region, is located in the middle belt of the country. It serves as a transit centre for travellers from the three regions in northern Ghana as well as others from Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Benin, Mali, and Togo.
The municipality arguably has the largest commercial market in West Africa and, therefore, attracts large volumes of vehicular traffic to the town.
Techiman has a total road network of 473.29-km but more than 70 per cent of these are untarred.
"Out of the 120-km of tarred roads, 76 per cent are main arterial roads and collectors. There is complete absence of tarred roads within the suburbs which directly serve the communities," the Director of Urban Roads, Alhaji Abass Awolu, stated.
He said it was obvious that the absence of tarred roads in the suburbs was putting pressure on the main arterials, and this had been the cause of vehicular congestion on the main road in the municipality.
