UDS indicates willingness to admit Banoebuuri

The University for Development Studies (UDS) has expressed its willingness to grant admission to Master Peter Banoebuuri in the 2015/2016 academic year, for him to pursue his dream of becoming a medical doctor.

That, the university said, would be done alongside other students whose applications would be considered for admission based on their grades.

The Registrar of the UDS, Dr A. B. T. Zakariah, who made this known to the Daily Graphic in Tamale, said Banoebuuri’s file was already with the Academic Affairs Office of the university and was being worked on for his admission next academic year.

Banoebuuri, a science student of the Nandom Senior High School, scored A1s in seven subjects and a B3 in English Language in the 2013 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

He gained admission to study medicine at the UDS, but he waived the opportunity when he could not raise the initial fees of GH¢1,950.

Dr Zakariah said English, Mathematics and Science were the subjects that were considered first for admissions and, therefore, Banoebuuri's issue would be looked alongside the performance of other students who would apply.

He explained that although Banoebuuri scored A1 in seven subjects, his aggregate added up to eight and not aggregate six, because of the B3 he obtained in English Language.

Dr Zakariah said Banoebuuri’s admission to the medical school would be based on the number of students who would apply and their aggregates.

Already, he said, the university had in place a programme to assist needy students such as Banoebuuri.

Intervention

Following the publication of Banoebuuri’s predicament in the Daily Graphic, President John Dramani Mahama directed the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to grant him full scholarship to study  at the university.

The intervention by the President will cover Master Banoebuuri's academic fees, hostel accommodation, feeding and any other expenses during the course of his seven-year study in the medical school.
