Two Ghanaian authors for ‘Monrovia Reads’

Two Ghanaian writers, Kofi Akpabli and Nana Awere Damoah, are in Monrovia to participate in ‘Monrovia Reads’, a literary and cultural festival in Liberia.

The two-day event which ends today, August 19, at the Peace Café, Sinkor, is a celebration of African literature and authorship.

“We reached out to those writers because of the tremendous work they have been doing with their DAkpabli Readathon which promotes book reading for pleasure as well as local authorship. We believe Africa needs a literary reawakening,” said Othniel Forte, Director of Forte Publishing, organisers of the event.

Nana Awere Damoah and Kofi Akpabli are expected to treat the audience, which includes some members of the Ghanaian community, to readings from their books which include I Speak of Ghana, Tickling the Ghanaian,  Sebitically Speaking  and Romancing Ghanaland.

‘Monrovia Reads’ also includes a writing seminar, book discussions and a workshop. Kofi Akpabli will also present a paper titled: “Warrior to Writer: Young Africans in the Flux of Representation.”

The event will also feature Liberian authors Mae Azango and Kpana N. Gaygay.

The Readathon campaign by Akpabli and Damoah has received local and international attention with ChinAfrica, monthly English language that focuses on China/Africa current affairs, doing a special feature on them in its January 2017 edition.

Apart from Ghanaian cities, the two authors have also held a reading in Lagos, Nigeria.
