Tidal waves ravage towns in Volta, Western regions

Many homes on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean have been destroyed following the resurgence of tidal waves in some parts of the Volta and the Western regions.

Some of the communities affected in the Volta Region are Fuveme, Dzita, Srogboe, Anyanui and Whuti, while those hit by the waves in the Western Region include Bewire, Apowosika and Titikolonu.

The National Coordinator of  the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Brigadier General Francis Sanzuri, led some officials of the organisation to visit Fuveme to assess the extent of damage caused and how NADMO could assist the people with relief items.

According to the Volta Regional Coordinator of NADMO, Mr Simon Miles Bakar, who briefed the Daily Graphic on the visit, the affected communities had been advised to relocate, but they had refused, except the people of Fuveme who had decided to comply.

Already, he said, NADMO had secured land to resettle the people.

Meanwhile, the waves have since subsided, after causing extensive damage to property and displaced hundreds of people.

In the case of the Western Region, it is currently experiencing very high temperatures and high tidal waves in the Axim area.

Since the beginning of April, there have been downpours in coastal and forest areas of the region, followed by a heat wave which has made life in parts of the region very uncomfortable.

The ongoing sea defence project in Shama, Sekondi/Takoradi and Ahanta West is saving the beneficiary communities from the angry waves.

However, Axim, communities such as Bewire, Apowosika and Titikolonu and the entire stretch leading to Half-Assini have been hit by the tidal waves.
