Three die in shoot-out with police

Three suspected robbers were shot and killed at dawn on Thursday during a shoot-out with the police at Weija in Accra.

The suspects, who have been under police surveillance for the past three months, were said to have been involved in most of the robberies and car snatching operations within and around Gbawe, Bortianor, Weija, Kokrobite and Kasoa.

They were identified by the police as Kwame Salsa, Jah Rule and Joe.

Car snatching

Briefing journalists, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr George Alex Mensah, said the three suspects had succeeded in snatching a number of vehicles and the police were on their heels.

He said the three recently attacked a man, whose identity is being protected by the police, and hijacked his Range Rover.

Unfortunately, they were not able to bolt with the vehicle and they abandoned it after ransacking it.

They allegedly took away some valuable items, including an ipad and an unspecified amount of money from the vehicle.

The abandoned vehicle was later retrieved by the police.

Shooting

Unknown to the three suspects, the police were monitoring their movements.

They allegedly undertook another car snatching operation last Thursday dawn.

Mr Mensah said at about 1 a.m. last Thursday, the suspected robbers attempted to snatch a vehicle but the occupants of the vehicle were policemen who were undertaking an undercover patrol operation.

They exchanged gunshots with the police and in the course of the shoot-out,  the police gunned down the three suspects.

A search on them led to the retrieval of the Ipad that was stolen from the Range Rover, locally manufactured pistols with nine rounds of BB cartridges, a Browning pistol with five rounds of nine millimetre ammunition and five mobile phones.

Mr Mensah used the opportunity to caution criminals, especially robbers, “to quit their nefarious activities or face the police squarely.”
