The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teacher, Mrs Irene Adanusa, has urged teachers to improve on their Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills.
She made this statement at a week-long ICT training organised by her outfit in collaboration with DreamOval Foundation, Ashesi University College and MTN Ghana for 100 basic education teachers drawn from deprived schools in the Eastern Region.
The teachers, aged 25 to 35, were selected from the upper primary and junior high schools.
The training is under the DreamOval Foundation iTeach project, an initiative to provide teachers with free basic ICT training to enable them to harness their newly acquired knowledge to enhance the teaching and learning experience in and out of the classroom.
The teachers are being taken through the power of the Internet and how to utilise Internet tools to augment classroom work, to improve their teaching skills and to employ Internet/ICT for their personal development.
She explained that teachers were always perceived by the society as workers who were always agitating for better conditions and not offering the right kind of teaching.
“Improving your skills is part of our professional development programmes, not only salary increases,” she said.
The Director, Basic Education of the Ghana Education Service, Mr Stephen Adu, said ICT remained the single most powerful tool for transforming the world today.
The Resource Centre Manager of GNAT, Mr Ernest Asamoa, said the objective of the training was to develop better awareness for teachers for the understanding and appreciation of the role of the Internet in education and teaching.
He said since its inception in 2010, the iTeach project had trained teachers from the Greater Accra , Central and Ashanti regions.
