Speaker orders probe into blackouts in parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, is reported to have ordered an immediate investigation into the continuous blackouts in parliament.

This move, according to Citi FM’s parliamentary correspondent, Richard Dela Sky, comes as a result of the constant power cuts in parliament during sitting, leaving the Speaker with no option but to suspend sitting.

Speaking from parliament house, Richard Sky specified that Mr Doe Adjaho believed the incessant power cuts had put enormous pressure on the power plant in Parliament, causing an explosion in it. The only choice left for the house was to rely on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for power supply.

“Yesterday, there was an explosion inside the plant that provides electricity for the house. A similar thing happened when members of parliament returned today so they had to suspend sitting for the power to be restored."

This, he said, provoked MPs who called on the Speaker to direct investigations into what exactly was the reason why parliament could not have reliable power supply.

According to him, the Speaker of Parliament consequently directed leadership, together with some members of parliament to investigate the situation.

Mr Doe Adjaho then urged the selected members to present their findings to the house by close of Tuesday, next week.
