The training programme, which will run for three weeks, is expected to take place from August 10, this year, according to a statement issued by the association last Friday.

The programme is also meant to improve the country’s performance in Mathematics after Ghana placed last in a recent programme of International Student Assessment (PISA).

Conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), in 76 countries, the assessment revealed the irrelevance attached to mathematics and Science by students.

The statement, signed by the President of the GMS, Prof. S. E. Anku, said the programme was aimed at removing apathy and phobia for Mathematics.

Each student is expected to pay GH¢ 230 to cover the cost of all training materials, and snacks.
All the students will be tracked during the year and will proceed to year two in August 2016, while the society recruits another 10,000 for year one in 2016.

Results of students will be monitored by the volunteers who train them after five years of intensive studies.
For this reason, the society called on the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to make available venues for the programme.

The GMS also urged the district assemblies and corporate organisations to support the students financially.
