President inaugurates projects in Ejura

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday inaugurated two warehouses in the Ejura-Sekyedumase Municipality as he toured the Ashanti Region.

He said the two warehouses were sited in Ejura-Sekyedumase alone instead of the single projects in other districts under a special project because of the municipality’s contribution to food production in the country.

At a durbar to inaugurate the warehouses, the President said the warehouses were expected to boost food production in the district and improve on the income of farmers because food produce would be stored to check post-harvest losses.

He, therefore, appealed to the people to reward the good work of the New Patriotic Party government with a second term in office, come next year’s general election.

He said within the last two years, the municipality had benefited from development projects, including the transformation of the Ejura Agriculture College into a modern school and the construction of the warehouses, among other projects.

About a year ago, the President cut the sod for the construction of the warehouses as part of the One District-One Warehouse programme.

Special initiative

The Minister in charge of Special Initiatives, Ms Mavis Hawa Koomsoon, said the warehouses were provided from the funds allocated to the $1 million per constituency programme.

She said Ejura-Sekyedumase’s share had been expended on projects that would help the residents to improve on their living conditions.

Aside the warehouses, she said the ministry had also undertaken other projects, including Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, to meet the health needs of the people.

She said when the government introduced the Planting for Food and Jobs programme, it was envisaged that there would be food surplus as a result of the programme, and the warehouses became a consequence of the expected excess produce so farmers could sell during the dry season.

She expressed the hope that the community would make good use of the facility to produce enough for both the local market and for export.

The Ejurahene, Barima Osei Hwidie II, appealed to the President for a modern market in the area to boost economic activity within the municipality.

He expressed gratitude to the president for the numerous development projects within the traditional area.

The chief also requested that the Ejura College of Agriculture be upgraded to a university devoted solely to agricultural programmes.
