Muslim youth movement march for peace

Members of the Sabon Zongo Youth Movement last Sunday organised a peace walk ahead of the Supreme Court verdict on the 2012 Presidential election petition in Accra.

The objective of the walk was to help educate and sensitise chiefs, the Muslim ummah, youth groups and people living in Zongo communities to the need for peace in the country after the verdict had been given on August 29.

Men, women and the youth   started the walk from Sabon Zongo, near Abossey Okai, through Sukula, Zabrama Line and ended at the  market at Sabon Zongo.

The theme for the event was “Together we make a difference in our society.”

The association is under the leadership of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Sharubutu.

Mr Muhibu Sakibu, President of the movement, in a chat with the Daily Graphic, said there was political tension in the country, hence the decision of the group to educate the youth in the Zongo communities not to allow themselves to be used as objects for destabilisation.

He also said the movement was using the walk as a platform, on behalf of Zongo communities, “to educate our brothers to continue to be peace ambassadors and help maintain peace after the Supreme Court verdict.’’

He recalled that a similar peace campaign was organised during the 2012 electioneering.

The Assemblyman for the Sabon Zongo area, Mr Yakubu Bane Asoke, advised the Zongo youth not to allow politicians to use them to cause violence since those who indulged in such acts would face the consequences.

He appealed to the youth who belonged to the two major political parties to sensitise their brothers and sisters to the need to avoid trouble after the verdict.
