Metro Mass increases fares by 20 per cent

The Management of Metro Mass Transit Company (MMT) has announced a fare increase of 20% effective October 1, 2013.

In a statement issued by the MMT explained that the increase is as a result of the mounting cost of maintenance of its fleet of 1,048 buses.

The statement indicated that MMT was compelled to increase the fares to make up for the other 20% announced early this year, which the company shelved to cushion its esteemed passengers.

The Company assured its passengers that MMT would continue to provide services nationwide despite the bad nature of the roads, as it is in line with its social mandate of making the services available to all at affordable fares.

The statement explained further that its Emergency Telephone No is temporarily out of order. Callers could in the meantime use 0243 153575 or 0242 879271 and receive prompt attention.

It also pointed out that its Free Ride for School Children Policy has not been stopped. However, school children in uniform only are entitled to be picked at mandatory stops.

For the reason above, all MMT drivers have been advised to slow down at the mandatory stops, avoid indiscipline and conform to the Road Safety Regulations.

It expressed pain and regret that despite several interventions made by Management to improve services, accidents had not abated.

The statement further noted that MMT was in the process of retraining it’s over 2,000 drivers nationwide in order to bring sanity on the roads and bring dependable services to passengers.
