Methodist Ministers’ Spouses donate to two bodies

The Methodist Ministers’ Spouses Association has announced plans to strengthen the counselling ministry of the church by offering counselling to the youth with respect to drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, streetism and marriage.

The counselling programme, which will takes the form of conferences, seminars and workshops in all the 19 dioceses of the Methodist Church Ghana, is aimed at helping the youth to stay focused on their future careers.

The Vice-President of the Association, Dr Albert Paintsil, disclosed this to the Daily Graphic after the association had donated GH¢40,000 each to the Ghana Heart Foundation and the Methodist University College, Ghana, in Accra.

The donations formed part of activities marking the 40th anniversary celebration of the association which is on the theme: ‘40 years; Celebrating God’s goodness, making disciples of all nations and rekindling the Methodist evangelical heritage for church growth.’

Dr Paintsil said drug abuse, streetism and teenage pregnancy had become a general concern not only in the church but the whole country, hence it was their hope that with the introduction of the counselling programme, the youth who engaged in such acts would stop and those who were not in it would not be tempted to engage in them.

He expressed the hope that they would start the counselling in the church and afterwards take it outside the church.

As part of the anniversary celebration, Dr Paintsil noted that the association intended to also visit the Methodist Rafiki Orphanage at Gyahadze at Winneba.
The anniversary will be climaxed with the association’s ninth Biennial Conference on August 18, 2017.

Gratitude

The Administrator of the Ghana Heart Foundation, Ms Anastasia Himans, and the Principal of the Methodist University College,  Ghana  Prof. Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, received the donations on behalf of their organisations and thanked the association with the promise that the money would be put to good use.

History of association

The association began as a small group by a few wives of ministers of the Methodist Church Ghana who were receiving vocational skills training at the Kwadaso Women’s Training Centre in Kumasi in August 1976.

The group continued to exist as a class undergoing skills training until in 1977 when the members decided to elect officers to steer the affairs of the group and this transformed it into an association with Mrs Grace Awotwi Pratt, the mother of the current Presiding Bishop of the church, as President.

Currently, the association boast about 1,000 members.
