Morris Adade Ansah, the suspect, is said to have kept the contraband in his mother’s wardrobe but events that unfolded after her death gave him up.

Following the death of Madam Florence Naago Ankra in Accra, Ansah is said to have insisted on accessing her room and wardrobe, leading to a scuffle between him and his siblings who would not allow him to do so because they said it was against tradition and custom.

Later, a fight between the suspect and his siblings because of their refusal to allow him to collect the fake items from their dead mother’s wardrobe made the siblings to lodge a complaint with the police and, ultimately, the police found out that the items were fake.

Fight

Confirming the arrest to the Daily Graphic, the Director General in charge of the MTTD, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Patrick Adusei Sarpong, said Ansah’s siblings reported a case of assault against him to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) after the fight.

During investigations, Mr Sarpong said the siblings told the police that on October 16, 2015, their mother handed over the keys to her wardrobe to their eldest sister.

The complainants, he said, confirmed that their mother had told them that Ansah was keeping some belongings of his in her wardrobe which should be handed over to him should she pass away.

According to Mr Sarpong, Madam Ankra died three days later, after which Ansah demanded the keys to the wardrobe to enable him to collect his items but his request was rejected.

Suspect arrested

Mr Sarpong said after the burial of his mother, Ansah pleaded with the family once again to allow him to collect his possessions from her room.

The family, Mr Sarpong said, then decided to open the wardrobe for Ansah to take out his belongings in the presence of the other siblings “and to their surprise they discovered large quantities of some roadworthy stickers which were not electronic, a large number of Goil fuel coupons, and an unspecified quantity of National Insurance Commission (NIC) stickers.

When questioned over the items, Mr Sarpong said Ansah claimed ownership but could not tell his family members what they were meant for.

The family, he said, refused to allow Ansah to take the documents away, resulting in a fight between him and the siblings and a report on the fight was made to the police.

It later came to light that the items that had caused the fight were fake but Ansah who was the main suspect had gone into hiding.

Mr Sarpong said Ansah was arrested on January 13, 2016, through police intelligence.
