Kumasi South Hospital undertakes development projects

The Kumasi South Hospital has embarked on a number of projects to improve on quality healthcare at the hospital.

The projects include the construction of a 120-bed ward being financed by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, a VIP ward funded by Maxwell Kofi Jumah,  a former Member of Parliament for Asokwa, and a central sterilisation centre also being financed from the hospital’s internally generated funds.

On completion, the sterilisation centre would serve all health centres in the Ashanti Region.

The Kumasi South Hospital was constructed in 1976, as an urban health centre and was later changed to be the Kumasi South Hospital.

In 2002, it was upgraded to the status of Ashanti  Regional Hospital.

The medical director at the Hospital, Dr Frank Abebrese, speaking at the mid-year performance review of the hospital, said the projects were expected to be completed by the end of the year.

He said accommodation, which had become a major problem of the hospital, had led to a situation where patients who underwent surgery at the hospital were discharged after three days.

Dr Abebrese stressed that the hospital desired to place greater emphasis on improving quality care, especially in the area of maternal and child health, including improved staff attitude, training and welfare.
