Kpone Katamanso residents raise funds to build police station

Residents in the Kpone Katamanso Constituency in Tema have organised a fund-raising activity to construct a police station in the community.

The decision follows numerous reports of crime in the community for which reason they want to ensure the security of the people and property by bringing the police to the community.

Some residents who attended the ceremony pledged a total of GH¢92 million, 5,000 blocks, and 1,680 bags of cement, while others offered to provide labour and  gravels for the construction of the facility.

The Member of Parliament for the constituency, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, presented a cheque for GH¢10,000 as his personal contribution to the project.

The construction of the facility is expected to begin in a fortnight and completed in eight months. It would be a one-storey building, made up of offices, male and female cells, a juvenile cell, an armoury and an exhibits room, among others.

It is being undertaken in collaboration with the Kpone-Katamanso District Assembly (KKDA) and the Keta Manso Traditional Area.

Speaking at the ceremony at Katamanso last Wednesday, Nii Laryea said in recent times, residents had expressed fear for their lives, and claimed that they were unable to sleep at night because attacks by armed robbers were common in the area.

Community involvement

Nii Laryea said there was the need to promote community involvement in the provision of infrastructure and social service as that would help attain rapid development.

He lauded the Inspector General of Police for introducing community policing and police visibility.

“That notwithstanding, we would admit that some of our communities and localities are still vulnerable to crime and it is important that we collaborate with the police to weed out miscreants from our communities he said.

He indicated that the police’s presence in the communities could be very effective and mutually beneficial through partnerships and support and also if the communities reposed confidence in the police.

He, therefore, urged the residents to work with the police to reduce crime and anti-social activities in the area, adding that discussions were far advanced to strengthen security in the district particularly in hot spots like Zenu Washingtion and New York, through police-community watch dog collaboration and intelligence gathering.

Other projects

Aside the construction of the police station, the District Coordinating Director of Kpone-Katamanso, Alhaji Yakubu Alhassan, mentioned other projects as the rehabilitation of a clinic, the construction of two senior high schools (SHSs) and roads, adding that the assembly was doing all it could to make the community better and safer for the residents.

For her part, the Regional Police Commander of Tema, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Beatrice Zaakpa Vib-Sanziri, lauded the people for the initiative stressing that policing was a shared responsibility.

She said the police would in the mean- time intensify patrols in the area to ensure adequate police visibility.

Road Inspection

Nii Laryea also inspected some roads that were under construction in the constituency.  They included the Ogli road, Saki road, and the Gbetseli stretch.

He expressed the hope that the contractors working on the roads would meet their deadlines to bring relief to the residents.
