Konkomba chiefs petition President on creation of new region

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said the creation of new regions out of the existing ones is not for political expediency but to ensure greater coherence and enhance governance.

“The process is not a political one. I am not seeking an advantage for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the process of creating regions. I am doing it because I think it will improve the governance of our country,” he said.

The President said this when a delegation of 50 Konkomba chiefs called on him at the Flagstaff House in Accra to present a petition for the creation of a North-Eastern Corridor Region.

The visit was also to congratulate him on his electoral victory and thank him for his presence at the funeral of the late chief of Saboba last October.

The President maintained that the creation of new regions would improve the quality of governance.

New regions

He recounted that at independence, the country had five regions and that by the time the Fourth Republic came into being, the number had increased to 10.

President Akufo-Addo explained that there were processes involved in the creation of regions and that all must respect those processes.

He emphasised that the creation of new regions should not be a subject of violence and threats, adding that anyone with grievances should resort to the mechanisms for dealing with such grievances.

He stressed that no one stood to benefit from disruptions and violence or intemperate behaviour in the country.

Accelerating development

He said he was elated about the way the Konkomba chiefs had gone about their request in a very constructive way.

He observed that the Northern Region was vast and that was why the momentum for the creation of new regions had begun from parts of that region.

President Akufo-Addo indicated that in the effort to accelerate the process of development, there was the need to look at the way the regions were composed and organised.

The Secretary to the Saboba Traditional Council, Mr Philip Dibabe, who spoke on behalf of the chiefs, said the vastness of the Northern Region had made some areas under-developed and that with the creation of the new region, development would be brought to an even scale.

He listed a number of development challenges facing the area and called for the President’s intervention to address those developmental needs.
