Kofi Boakye warns drug barons

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Nathan Kofi Boakye, has sent a strong signal to drug barons in the region to put a stop to their activity or face the law.

He said he knew all their hideouts and operational areas and it was time they stopped destroying the lives of the youth or face the wrath of the police and the law.

According to him, the police would not sit aloof and allow the few selfish barons to get rich at the expense of the youth.

Mr Boakye gave the warning last Friday at this year’s WASSA celebration of the Manhyia Division of the Ghana Police Service.

Traditional leaders

He also appealed to traditional and opinion leaders in the communities to prevail on their members to stop their nefarious activities as he would not entertain any pleas from anyone when someone from their communities was caught at the wrong side of the law.

He said more often than not, traditional and opinion leaders would want to use their influence to seek the release of suspected criminals from their areas, when they are caught doing the wrong thing.

He said his administration would not countenance interferences from any quarters and warned such leaders to stay away from his office.

Violent crimes

He admitted that the command was overwhelmed by the spate of violent crimes but added that the command was up to the task.

According to him, the command had been able to arrest almost all the perpetrators of violent crimes that had occurred in the metropolis over the last two weeks.

Mr Boakye appealed for logistics to enable the police to perform their role particularly in the provision of security in the region.

He said the police alone could not provide the needed security for all and would need the cooperation and assistance of all and sundry.

Asokore Mampong

He commended the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly for its assistance to the police by agreeing to train two neighbourhood Watch Committees at the cost of GH¢50, 000 and also agreed to pay the members after the training.

That, he said, would go a long way to complement the work of the police as the Watch Committees would enable the police to release some of their personnel for other areas.

He said the priority of the command was to bring violent crimes in the region to the barest minimum “and the Ghana Police Service will maintain law and order in the metropolis and region by any means possible.”

The Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mrs Deborah Addison-Campbell, said she was grateful to the chiefs and elders of the Zongo communities and the traditional leaders for their support to the service in ensuring peace within the division in the past year.

She thanked the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology  for donating a police station to the service at Ayeduase and also agreeing to provide two more for the Kotei and Ayigya communities.
