Kofi Boakye cautions MTTD personnel

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, has admitted that the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service is an embarrassment to the force.

“Their actions tend to taint our reputation as a bunch of corrupt people,” he lamented.

“I must state that most of the MTTD officers are really embarrassing the service. If only anybody could report that any of them is involved in bribery or extortion, then the police would take action to the fullest,” he said at yesterday’s regional commander’s parade and the launch of the regional re-affirmation of public confidence in the Ghana Police Service at Patase in Kumasi.

He, however, cautioned the public that both the giver and the taker of bribes were  liable and would face the full rigours of the law when caught.

The regional police commander had earlier on introduced stickers- ‘We don’t take bribes-’ which should be embossed on all police cars.

He also introduced a blueprint on the dos and don’ts of the police service and handouts to educate the public on their rights in their engagements with the police.

As part of measures to sanitise the force and make it more attractive, DCOP Kofi Boakye said all armed robbery cases would be centralised at the regional headquarters in Kumasi, while an anti-robbery task force had been formed to streamline all such cases.

Yesterday’s parade was a follow up to a recent one held by the IGP in Accra, where he touched on abuse of authority, illegal detention and unlawful arrest, among others.

The parade was also to help discourage police brutality and encourage the use of less force in their dealings with the public.

DCOP Kofi Boakye said bribery and extortion were not the only corrupt practices, stating that even nepotism and leaders trying to interfere in the work of the police constituted corruption.
