KBTH junior nurses to receive salaries today

Junior nurses of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), who staged a protest march last Monday over the delayed payment of their salaries and allowances are to receive their first salary by October 3 this year.

On Monday, management promised the aggrieved nurses of the payment of their first salary on the same day, but that did not happen.

In an interview, a leader of the aggrieved nurses, Mr Abdul Salam Mohammed, told the Daily Graphic, that management had explained at a meeting with them yesterday that the delay was due to technical problems.

According to Mr Mohammed, the management assured them they would rather receive their salaries by October 3.

The hospital management, he said, had assured them of their subsequent monthly salaries, that would be deposited into their accounts.

Mr Mohammed said the aggrieved nurses had also agreed to a management proposal, of a one month consultation with stakeholders concerning the payement of their arrears.

Demonstration

Junior nurses at the KBTH last Monday, staged a demonstration against management of the hospital for the non-payment of their salaries and allowances for 21 months.

They requested that a memorandum of understanding must be signed between them and management, spelling out the timelines for the payment of their arrears.

In a petition presented to the acting Chief Executive of KBTH, Reverend Albert O. Botchway, the nurses said they had not been paid their salaries or allowances since they were employed, a development which they described in their petition as “our painful situation”.
