June 3 Disaster survivors appeal for support

Some survivors of the June 3 Disaster, which occurred at the Adabraka end of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange, are appealing to the government to support them to make ends meet.

They claim that apart from earlier compensations made to them by the government for medical bills, they have not received any financial support.

Memorial service

The survivors were speaking during a memorial service organised by the Flood and Fire Victims Association yesterday for those who lost their lives in the 2015 event.

Wreaths were laid by the Chairman of the association, Mr Thomas Sekyi; the Municipal Chief Executive of the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, Mr Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah, and the Dormaa Aduana Ntuntum Ankobiah Hemaa, Nana Pomaah Nkyira, during the ceremony.

Nana Nkyira donated three wheelchairs and a lifter machine to the 37 Military Hospital to support the operations of the facility.

Words of exhortation, amidst singing of hymns and prayers were said for the survivors at the ceremony.

Survivors

One of the survivors, Mr Kasim Suraj, told the Daily Graphic that he was still receiving treatment from the hospital, and, therefore, was in need of financial support to pay for his medical bills and to fend for himself.

"I lost my wife and children in the fire incident; I am appealing to the government to come to my aid as I have lost it all. I am also suggesting that the government can help us by paying some monies as pension for us so we can have something to rely on,” he said.

Another survivor, Alex Mensah, said although the government took care of his medical bills during his treatment for nine months, life had not been easy upon his discharge.

Aunty Ama, a resident of the community, who was also affected by the disaster, said she and her family were still battling with hypertension and ulcer after gulping fuel spilled into the flood waters that day.

“My then 23-year-old and eight-year-old children are still unhealthy as I cannot offer them proper healthcare due to financial constraints. Our health is deteriorating, we don't have enough to feed ourselves and our families, so we are appealing to the government, organisations and individuals to support us,” she said.

Mr Sekyi reiterated their plight, and appealed to the government to fulfil the promises made to them to offer them support for their upkeep.

Assurance

The MCE of the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly told journalists after the ceremony that the government was undertaking several projects to ensure that perennial flooding became a thing of the past in the municipality.

He said processes were ongoing to correct the engineering problem concerning the flow of water from the community into the Odaw drain.
