Julius Debrah supports museum construction at Damongo

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Julius Debrah, has pledged to cede 70 per cent of his monthly salary for the construction of a community museum at Damongo in the West Gonja District to serve as a resource and learning centre for the youth of the area.

The museum will house a community library  in honour of President John Dramani Mahama, who was born and bred at Damongo.

The library would also serve as the seat of the traditional authority of the Yagbon Kingdom (Gonja  Traditional Council) in the Northern Region.

It would also be stocked with books on President Mahama and other leaders for study by the youth.

 Chieftaincy title

Mr Debrah made the pledge after he was enskined by the Yagbonwura, Sulemana Tumtumba  Boresaa, the overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area, at his palace at Damongo as the “Makpeto Wura",  which literally means “a chief who is fair and does not discriminate.”

The chieftaincy title was conferred on Mr Debrah when he was led by the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, to pay a courtesy call on the Yagbonwura to solicit his support to impress on his subjects to take part in the forthcoming district-level elections to ensure a high turnout.

Mr Debrah, in appreciation of the honour done him, expressed the hope that on completion of the project, it would serve generations yet unborn and help them to appreciate our history.

He said his decision to use part of his monthly salary to construct the museum  was to assure the youth that “no matter where one was born, one could make an impact and contribute to societal well-being”.

Mr Debrah used the occasion to appeal to traditional rulers to impress on their people to show keen interest in the forthcoming district-level elections by turning out in their numbers to vote.

He urged them to vote for the right candidates as their representatives  at the assembly.

Boreholes

Mr Debrah also pledged that his ministry would provide two boreholes and modern sanitary facilities (toilets) for the area to enhance personal hygiene.

The Yagbonwura, earlier in his address, thanked the minister and his entourage for the visit and also expressed his appreciation to the government for the construction of the Fulfoso-Damongo-Sawla Road which has reduced the the three hours spent on a journey to about 30 minutes.
