A visit to the courts by a Ghana News Agency team observed that many judges who hitherto do not wear their wigs and robes had complied with the Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo’s directives.

The Chief Justice on Wednesday directed all Judges to with immediate effect begin the wearing of the symbolic wigs during court sittings.

The directive, which was contained in an internal memo from the Judicial Secretary, also instructed judges to ensure they are fully attired in robes alongside the wigs.

The memo explained that, the directive was to preserve the tradition and uniqueness of the work of Judges and the legal profession.

It also explained that, the wearing of the wigs will enhance the security of judges and also provide them the needed protection and anonymity required in the administration of justice.

It said the new directive also aimed at restoring the formal nature of court proceedings, and eliminate what she describes as the “creeping casualness in the judicial system.”
