The Groupe Nduom Foundation has funded the construction of a GH¢500,000 dormitory block for St Augustines College in Cape Coast.
The foundation is funded by contributions from Groupe Nduom Companies.
Yorke Properties, the construction arm within the group, designed and supervised the construction of the project within a year.
The project has an Information Communication Technology (ICT) Centre, a study and a teacher’s flat attached to it. The foundation also provided student beds and mattresses for the 120 students expected to occupy the dormitory.
The Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Coast, Most Rev. Mathias Nketsia, consecrated the dormitory before it was officially handed over to the school.
Presenting the dormitory to the school, the President of Group Nduom Companies, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, who himself is an old student of the college, said it was the aim of the foundation to promote and educate all Ghanaian children “so that our minimum educational qualification as a people can become a good high school diploma.”
Dr Nduom, who was the 2012 Presidential Candidate of the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) and is a business consultant, said the foundation had education, health care and cultural activities as its priority areas and was providing educational infrastructure and scholarships for a number of students across the country.
The new dormitory brings to 11 the number of dormitories in the school. It was built in fulfillment of a promise made to the school by Dr Nduom to help decongest the school’s dormitories.
Dr Nduom took the opportunity to recognise the efforts and contributions made by many people with diverse backgrounds to get the project completed on time.
He also appreciated the positive attitude of the headmaster of the college, his sense of gratitude and goodwill, which continues to make it easier for the foundation to support the college.
“It is our intention to ensure that this school dormitory is properly maintained. We wish to ask the school administrators to keep the building in good condition. On our part, we will commission an annual inspection to determine work to be done,” he assured the gathering which included old students of the college.
Dr Nduom also used the occasion to support the idea to return mission schools to their founders.
“In this day where common etiquette, hard work, selflessness and incorruptible behaviour are hard to find in Ghana, more, not less, value-based education with spiritual grounding is needed,” he stated.
The National President of the St Augustine Past Students Union (APSU), Dr Anthony Osei, said it was worrying that despite the increase in the number of students in the school over the years, there had not been a corresponding lead in the facilities available in the school.
The Headmaster of the school, Mr Joseph Cornnel, thanked Dr Nduom for the facility, saying it would go a long way to ease congestion in the school.
