Graphic Editor commends Vokacom for global awards

The Editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr Kobby Asmah, has pledged the support of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) to Vokacom, a wholly owned Ghanaian Information Technology (IT) company, in its quest to use IT to accelerate national development.

He said the GCGL believed and supported the can-do spirit of the Ghanaian and would, therefore, support Vokacom’s initiatives.

Mr Asmah gave the pledge when officials of Vokacom, led by its General Manager (GM)-Human Resource (HR), Ms Abena Darkoa Antwi-Darkwa, and the Managing Director of Asaase GPS Limited, a subsidiary of the Vokacom Group, Mr Richmond Frimpong, paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Accra yesterday.

Awards

Vokacom won two awards at the 2019 edition of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Telecom Awards in Hungary last week.

The event was organised by the ITU, a United Nations (UN) specialised agency for information and communications technology (ICT).

Vokacom won the World Global SME Award for Best Business Model and a special recognition for Excellence in Innovation and Social Impact.

According to Mr Frimpong, some 175 global small and medium technology companies from over 35 countries participated in the competition.

"We participated in the United Nations ICT agency event through the effort of the government of Ghana.

After competing with 170 companies from more than 35 countries, Vokacom and Asaase GPS solution were given the Best SME Business Model award.

"Together with our group chief executive, we have a mandate to showcase the competence of Ghanaian businesses and our ability to transcend Africa with our business model," he said.

“Basically, we thought that this was a great award by the UN agency, so we decided to come and share it with the best print media and online communications company, graphiconline, to inform the rest of the country," he added.

Ms Antwi-Darkwa also said the award was a validation that Vokacom was headed in the right direction, adding that her outfit was committed to providing more innovations to accelerate the country’s growth.

Other officials of Vokacom who paid the courtesy call were Mr Bernard Osei-Akoto, the Managing Director, Tekhype Limited, a subsidiary of Vokacom; Ms Mawuena Darkey, a Personal Assistant to the Group Chief Executive Officer; Mr George Idan, a Project and Research Analyst, and Mr Michael Andersen, an official of the company.

They were later taken on a tour of the Daily Graphic Newsroom by Mr Asmah.

Commendation

Mr Asmah commended Vokacom for the achievement, saying: "It is really good to know that you have won such a global award for not only your company but the country at large. I consider this an honour for the nation and, therefore, all Ghanaians must share in the glory.

That a wholly owned Ghanaian company has gone through such global competition to emerge as overall winner means a lot. It means that Ghana has the potential to rub shoulders with the rest of the world.”

“We want to pledge our support to Vokacom; we will walk side-by-side with you to accelerate national development," he added.

He urged Vokacom not to rest on its laurels but strive to win more awards for the company and the nation.
