Phoenix Insurance donates to Korle Bu Surgery Department

Phoenix Insurance Company Limited, a non-life insurance company, has presented 10 desktop computers and accessories to the Department of Surgery of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The gesture was to support clinical care, teaching and research activities at the hospital, strengthen the department’s electronic medical records system and improve data management for patient care and academic work.

The Managing Director of Phoenix Insurance, Henry Bukari, presenting the items, said the donation formed part of the commitment of the company to corporate social responsibility and support for critical national institutions.

He said Phoenix Insurance recognised the important role the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital played in healthcare delivery and expressed its commitment to building a long-term partnership with the surgery department to address some of its pressing needs.

The Phoenix Insurance MD also appealed to other corporate organisations to support the hospital.

Commitment

Explaining further, Mr Bukari said when the Department of Surgery approached the company for assistance, the management and the board quickly approved the request and mobilised the computers.

He said the company viewed the Korle Bu Hospital as a critical national asset and considered the support to the hospital as an opportunity to improve healthcare delivery in the country.

He said the donation marked the beginning of a broader collaboration with the hospital.

Improving patient care

The Head of the Department of Surgery and a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the hospital, Dr Patrick Bankah, expressed appreciation to Phoenix Insurance for responding promptly to the department’s request.

He said electronic medical records had become standard practice in modern healthcare delivery, but the department faced challenges due to inadequate computers and other data-capturing devices.

Dr Bankah said the equipment would help improve patient management, research, teaching and innovation by enhancing the department’s ability to capture and process clinical information.

He said although the hospital’s management continued to work to address such needs, support from corporate organisations remained essential in helping the institution to deliver quality healthcare services.
