Market women advised to check health status regularly

A non-governmental organisation, Women Empowerment Foundation International (WEFI), has organised a health screening exercise for women at the Makola market in Accra.

The exercise which formed part of the organisation’s 10th anniversary brought a medical team from the Makola Clinic to undertake the screening.

The beneficiaries were screened for diabetes, hypertension, malaria, breast screening, among others and were administered drugs while others with complications were referred to bigger health facilities.

‘Be conscious of your

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Spokesperson for the Foundation, Mrs Vida Adjei–Mensah, expressed concern about the fact that the market women worked under harsh conditions and had poor eating habits yet paid less attention to their health.

She said the health screening was therefore to create awareness to the women of their health and also to enable them to check their health status.

She advised them that they could only enjoy the fruits of their labour if they stayed healthy and strong and so urged them to be conscious of their health and live healthy lifestyles in order to be able to take care of their children.

The foundation

Since its establishment in 2010, Mrs Adjei-Mensah said the foundation had supported many children through the awarding of scholarship to brilliant, needy students from primary to the university level.

Currently, she said the foundation was taking care of about 35 students in the universities while other 150 were in the primary, junior and senior high school levels.

She said the foundation has also renovated the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital children’s ward, 37 Military Hospital children’s ward, adopted the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital children’s ward and distributed school uniforms, books and materials to over 5000 schoolchildren.

‘Support our vision’

The Founder of the WEFI, Mrs Sonia Antwi, said she had the vision to support and help the vulnerable and needy in society considering the fact that the government could not do all.

Currently, she said, the foundation was working to train single mothers and equip them with requisite skills that they could use to generate income.

She appealed to benevolent Ghanaians and corporate institutions to support the foundation in implementing its activities and programmes.
