The Greater Accra Regional Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has called for a renewed approach to corporate governance that moves beyond compliance and focuses on accountability, transparency, ethical leadership and institutional transformation.
The call was made at the official launch of the 2026 Law Week celebration in Accra, which is taking place from July 10 to 18, 2026, on the theme: “Corporate Governance Rebooted: From Rules to Transformation.”
Speaking at the launch, the President of the Greater Accra Regional Ghana Bar Association, Isabel Boaten, emphasised that effective corporate governance is critical to building resilient institutions capable of responding to the demands and challenges of a rapidly evolving world.
She noted that governance should not be viewed solely as adherence to rules and regulations but as the creation of systems and cultures that promoted responsible leadership, integrity, accountability and sustainable growth.
Ms Boaten said that the Law Week celebration would bring together lawyers, business leaders, regulators, academics and other stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions on practical strategies for strengthening corporate governance practices in Ghana.
Justice reform
The Vice-President of the Greater Accra Regional Bar, Andrew Appau Obeng, welcomed ongoing judicial reforms aimed at improving Ghana’s criminal justice system, describing them as essential to deepening democracy and enhancing public confidence in the administration of justice.
According to him, the justice system should not only focus on punishment but also provide opportunities for rehabilitation, reintegration and personal transformation.
Mr Obeng highlighted the potential benefits of alternative sentencing for minor offences, noting that such measures could help reduce prison overcrowding while enabling offenders to contribute positively to society through community service initiatives, support for educational institutions and participation in public projects.
He, however, stressed the importance of robust supervision and enforcement mechanisms to ensure the effectiveness and integrity of the system.
Corporate and legal education
The Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Regional Bar, Augustina Osei-Bonsu, stated that the Corporate and Legal Education (CLE) Conference scheduled for July 14 would focus on helping lawyers appreciate their role beyond traditional courtroom advocacy. Professor Douglas Boateng, a renowned corporate governance expert, would deliver the keynote address.
She noted that lawyers played critical roles within corporations, law firms, public institutions and other organisations, where they contributed significantly to governance, policy formulation and strategic decision-making.
As such, she said legal practitioners must be equipped to champion sound corporate governance practices in every sphere of influence.
As part of the Law Week activities, the Regional Bar will undertake a Prison Case Support Initiative from July 10 to 13, providing legal assistance to inmates who may lack access to adequate legal representation.
Lawyers will offer free legal advice and services to members of the public during the Legal Clinics Outreach Programme on July 18.
Communities expected to benefit from the outreach include Makola Market, Makola Shopping Mall, Kwaasia Gyaaso and the Ghana School of Law.
The programme is being organised in collaboration with the judiciary as part of activities commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Supreme Court of Ghana.
