The project is to help girls and young women, especially school dropouts, to develop entrepreneurial skills that would enable them to be self-employed and earn incomes.

It forms part of the ‘Fit for work - fit for life’ programme initiated by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), of which the Ghana Girl Guides Association is a member.

Mrs Ofori-Kissi, the Chief Commissioner of the Ghana Girl Guides Association, told the Chief of Amuana Praso,  Nana Opoku Agyemang II,  during a courtesy call on him at his palace at the weekend that they chose Amuana-Praso for the project because of the commitment and interest the Girl Guides Unit in the area had shown to the cause of the association.

She added that the first phase of the project would involve the launch and recruitment of young women to be trained for the programme, while the second and third phases, which would be the main body of the project, would follow up in the next few weeks.

She also expressed the hope that they would take the project as their own and encourage more girls to participate in the training.

Mrs Ofori said the GGGA was concerned about the plight of young women who were not gainfully employed and that the programme was part of an attempt to educate them on how to solve some of their problems, particularly getting them off the streets of urban towns and cities to engage in meaningful to productive activities.

She advised the young girls to take their education seriously to enable them grow up and become responsible citizens.

Mrs Ofori-Kissi also appealed to parents, especially mothers, to attach special importance to the education of their children by providing all their needs to facilitate their studies.

The chief of the town, Nana Opoku Agyemang II, also praised the association’s initiative and described it as a good one and a blessing in disguise. He challenged the young women and girls in the town to take the project seriously, since it would  be beneficial to them.

He also expressed concern about the anti-social behaviour of the youth, and appealed to parents to advise their children to desist from such vices.
